One thing I love is walking into a bakery, smelling its sweet smells and looking at the display of hand crafted desserts. It takes all my strength to only buy one thing. I usually just want to try so many different things!
My first stop was a place you may have heard about, Baked By Melissa. It’s a bakery that sells mini cupcakes! There are so many different flavors and the creativity that goes into them is just astounding. This particular shop was small and decor was white or clear. It gave it a very modern feel, but I think a little more color could have done some good in this place. It seemed to be quite popular. If you’re not in the area to go to this bakery, don’t worry, because they ship nationwide when you order online! You can have mini cupcakes everywhere you go!
Next stop, The Bread Factory Cafe! It was extremely busy when I was in there. Many people were enjoying lunch and many were in line to order. It was a little hectic. The people behind the counter were rushing around frantically and when they were done with one order they would yell as loud as they could saying, “NEXT!!” And of course, the person next in line didn’t even respond. So, the employee once again yelled, “NEXT!!” and the customer finally realized they were next. They had everything from lunch food, to many amazing desserts. Cakes, pies, pastries, brownies, cupcakes and more! It all looked so good! To attract customers, they have a window display that looks more than delicious. It certainly got me to stop.
Financier Patisserie just sounds fancy, doesn’t it? Well, I think the name is fancier than the place. Don’t get me wrong, it was very quaint. There were small tables for people to enjoy their treats and relax. They didn’t have a huge variety of sweets, but it still looked good nonetheless. To go with the delicious desserts, this place sold coffee, frappes and a selection of other beverages. They even sold yogurt parfaits. Something healthy in a bakery is always good.
If you’re looking for macaroons, what better place to go than the Macaron Cafe! As soon as you walk in you are hit with a delightful aroma. At the counter, there is a display of macaroons of just about every color and flavor you could imagine. You could also stop here for lunch as they sell sandwiches, salads and coffee. There were small round tables in the front by the window and a small seating area in the back. Cute decor was everywhere and the people eating here were dressed well. Perhaps they were taking a lunch break from work, but either way, they had great style.
Now, my next stop isn’t the conventional bakery, but it’s filled with great tasting chocolate! That would be Lindt! Oh the savory, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate. You just can’t get enough. They have so many flavors and so many displays. You can get round chocolate, square chocolate, rectangle chocolate, any shape chocolate! When you walk in, a worker greets you and gives you a free sample. It’s a sneaky way to get you to buy more! If I had money to spend, I would have definitely bought some. It’s a bit pricey, but it’s Lindt, so they’re allowed to be. A pound of their special chocolate is $14.00 and you have to buy at least one pound if you are doing the thing where you pick the chocolate and put it in a plastic bag. I think it’s well worth it. If you couldn’t tell, I love chocolate and I think I’ll have to come back here and buy something before I leave because I don’t have one of these stores around me.
Continuing with the chocolate theme, I stopped in at Godiva. Now, I thought they just sold chocolate (which they have an assortment of) but they have much more than that. There is a person in the window making fresh chocolate covered strawberries! Yum! They also have cookies, truffles and other chocolate covered pastries. Right now they are featuring a Godiva Shake which is like a milk shake but with chocolate. Well, most of them are made with different kinds of chocolate, but you can also get strawberry or caramel. It is topped with whipped cream and chocolate shavings. Talk about fancy. The pictures were very enticing, but one of these shakes costs $6. It was in a small Starbucks kind of cup. So it wasn’t that big, but it sure looked delicious so it just might be worth it.
As I was wandering the streets of Manhattan looking for my next bakery, I went down a little side street on the Upper East Side and found a cute little place called Bel Ami. It was very small and had small seating areas on either side of the store. They sold coffee, hot chocolate and iced drinks. In their display case they had pastries and macaroons. They also had fruit salad and sandwiches so you could get more than just sweets here. I greatly enjoyed this little place. It kind of felt like a coffee shop except it had more dessert options than it did coffee options.
My last place is also a great place to get macaroons. It is highly raved about and I have heard that it is the “next best thing to Paris.” It’s called Ladureé. This luxury bakery has decor to make you feel like you are in Paris and the way they talk to you also gives you that feeling. For example, if you are a woman, they will call you mademoiselle! It’s very fancy. They sell a great assortment of macaroons. I had a difficult time picking out which ones I wanted to try. I ended up getting pistachio and caramel. They were both very good. And, it was my first time every having a macaroon. They also sell different kinds of chocolates. When I went, I was lucky enough not to run into any lines. But, when I pass this place, the line is usually out the door and down the street! It is extremely popular.
